Primer: Foundations in Project Management – A Course for Non-PMS (90 Minutes)

In this fast-paced introductory session, participants will gain a practical, accessible overview of project management principles โ€” no prior experience required. Designed specifically for professionals who support or participate in projects but don’t carry the “Project Manager” title, this primer covers the essentials: what a project is, how projects are structured, and what tools and terminology you’ll encounter in a project environment. At the end of the session, participants will have a foundational vocabulary and a clearer understanding of how projects work from start to finish โ€” and may find themselves inspired to explore deeper training.

WHAT YOU LEARN

  1. Understand what a project is and how it differs from ongoing operations, using the PMBOKยฎ definition as a guide;
  2. Get familiar with the most common project management terms and definitions โ€” from Work Breakdown Structures to Risk Registers;
  3. Walk through the 5 project phases (Initiation, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Control, and Closing) and what happens in each;
  4. Learn the basics of the Project Charter and why the Initiation phase sets the tone for project success;
  5. Explore project management frameworks, including Predictive (Waterfall) and Adaptive (Agile) approaches.
